Barry and Peaches Case study for website

From Dream to Reality: How Barry Found the Perfect Companion in Peaches.

At Living Well Solutions, we don’t just provide accommodation, we create homes where our clients can thrive, build connections, and live fulfilling lives. The story of Barry and Peaches beautifully illustrates the transformative power of pets in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes.

A Journey to Companionship

Barry, one of our cherished clients, longed for the companionship of a dog. However, the question loomed—was he ready for the responsibility? Owner of Living Well Solutions, Trisha had a thoughtful idea: Barry could dog-sit her own dog as a trial. First, it was two nights, and then two weeks. Barry exceeded all expectations, proving not only to himself, but also to those around him, that he was ready to welcome a pet into his life.

With the support of Barry’s Aunt, Trisha started the search for the perfect dog. A generous breeder in Queensland stepped in, offering Peaches, as a gift. Trisha organised Peaches’ journey from Queensland to Melbourne and drove her to Barry’s home in Armstrong Creek. The grand reveal—hidden in the lounge room—was a moment of pure joy as Barry met his new companion for the first time.

Peaches: Bringing People Together

Peaches quickly settled into her new home and made an incredible impact. The relationship between the housemates is stronger than ever, and Peaches is at the heart of it all. While she has her own bed, she often chooses the couch—or even Barry’s bed—and isn’t shy about stealing his pillow for herself!

The Benefits of Pets in SDA Homes

The presence of pets in SDA homes offers immense benefits, supported by research and initiatives like Dogs Connect. Pets can help to provide emotional support, enhance social connections, assist in developing routines and responsibility, and improve physical activity.

Keeping Pets in SDA Homes in Victoria.

In Victoria, residents in SDA homes enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as other renters when it comes to having pets in their home. It is a good idea to obtain consent from the SDA provider and other residents. SDA providers cannot unreasonably refuse consent. If consent is refused, residents can challenge the decision through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

In addition to gaining consent, residents must adhere to local council by-laws and practice responsible pet ownership. This includes providing proper care and ensuring that pets do not cause damage or nuisance.
